The Met

The Met is a 13-story residential development in the heart of the South Park district of downtown Los Angeles. Ideally located two blocks from the Staples Center arena, LA Live and the Microsoft Theater, The Met is fully nestled into the Entertainment District—but at the time of building, the South Park area had no entertainment to speak of. When Forest City took on the project in the early 1980s, downtown Los Angeles was an underserved community in need of forward-thinking ideas to bring about revitalization.

The Met became emblematic of many future Forest City projects. It was one of the first developments in which the team focused specifically on both serving disadvantaged communities, and working directly alongside local municipalities to determine essential wants and needs. In what would later become a Forest City trademark, 20% of the residences were allocated as affordable housing. The city of Los Angeles provided the ground lease and subsidy, and trusted Forest City to redevelop the area with the utmost care.

The Met was a transformative project for the Forest City team. Upon opening in 1989, it was a strong performer in the market and has continued to be prosperous since. The success of the project brought Forest City a boost of credibility, and continued to be an asset as the team grew. The Art Deco-inspired architecture has stood the test of time. While Los Angeles has continued to evolve, The Met remains a singular and timeless part of the cityscape.
