San Francisco Centre

San Francisco Centre is in the Market Street area of downtown San Francisco. It’s the result of a 10 plus year effort to redevelop the historic Emporium department store building–an architectural landmark in San Francisco. The center has approximately 170 specialty stores and casual restaurants, as well as office space for Microsoft and San Francisco State University.

Forest City always wanted to do a project in San Francisco, but it’s a difficult city to develop in. This was an opportunity the team couldn’t pass up. Part of the entitlement process required convincing then-mayor Willy Brown to offer his support–in the end, it became one of the signature accomplishments during his tenure. It took six years to put together a plan that could be sold to the neighborhood, and thirteen years to develop. It turned out to be one of the greatest urban shopping centers in America. And it opened doors for more opportunities in San Francisco, including projects like Pier 70.

Since its completion, San Francisco Centre has been recognized as one of 9 finalists for “World’s Best Shopping Center,” and has been a critical component in the revitalization of the Market Street neighborhood, complementing nearby Union Square. The 1.5-million-square-foot center can be spotted by its iconic glass dome, which was lifted 60 feet during construction to fit on top of the new atrium. Inside, the space is grand but also intimate. It’s a beloved and memorable building that Forest City remains very proud of. San Francisco Centre epitomizes the team’s unique sense of daring and ability to tackle complex projects.
