New York Times

The New York Times Building inhabits West 41st St. and 8th Ave. in the Times Square neighborhood of midtown Manhattan, across the street from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Thanks to the striking architectural design, innovative shading and lighting system integrated within, and its enduring distinction as the hub for “All the News That’s Fit to Print,” it has become an integral part of the New York City Skyline.

This project came to Forest City immediately following September 11, 2001, one of the most tumultuous and uncertain times in New York City history. Uneasiness about taking on this project loomed large–why invest in a 52-story building when the high-rise market had collapsed overnight? Ultimately the Forest City team was won over. The architect Renzo Piano, the institution of the New York Times and the picture-perfect NYC location made it an opportunity that couldn’t be turned down. The result is an iconic building that remains fully leased and highly successful. In the legacy of Forest City, it has exceeded every possible expectation.

Forest City believes that thoughtful architecture and design can change the world. In all of its 1.5 million square feet, the New York Times Building is a functional and aesthetic marvel. An open and innovative floor plan represents the culture of collaboration and transparency, while the stunning exterior acts as sun-shade and reflects the color of the sky, in turn saving energy. The lobby is encased entirely in glass, which plays delightfully against the muscular steel beams and spandrels that support the soaring tower. It’s filled with sunlight and fresh air, sharp edges and clean lines. The New York Times building is a testament to the Forest City commitment to urban development and ability to attract premier partners and tenants.
