5M is a mixed-use development in the Mission Street neighborhood of San Francisco. It was proposed in 2012 in partnership with the Hearst corporation. A challenging entitlement process was followed by numerous public hearings. Forest City, true to its nature, worked to address the needs of the community by listening to the will of the people. After approval in 2015, construction began in 2019.
5M as a whole has placed emphasis on serving the people of San Francisco. Numerous open green spaces (on both rooftop and ground levels), community-focused event centers, and 33% designated affordable housing units all direct 5M toward this goal. As the project continues its buildout, preserving iconic historical buildings remains key in protecting the soul of this distinctive area. Former San Francisco Chronicle Buildings are among the architecture to be conserved, restored and repurposed—including the century-old Dempster building, once a Chronicle printing plant.
The artistic energy of downtown San Francisco will be woven into the fabric of 5M through a steady stream of cultural events, murals by local artists, and more. Additionally, the project has allocated 75 million dollars toward public benefits, including donations to public schools in the surrounding area. Although Forest City’s role in launching 5M has been completed, the legacy of the project and its place in San Francisco’s history is just beginning. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
